README can always be read in advance, is easy to maintain and, imho, one of the first places to look at if you run into ports/package problems. This just makes more sense to me. A patch means more work for us and I'm not sure there's better wording that is general enough for upstream to accept yet specific enough for OpenBSD. I don't object if you/others think that's worth it.
