I am remembering when I was just getting started, and was very
impressed with my abilities and I eagerly contributed a small bit of
code to a collaborator.

The code would crash for a test case that I had not thought to test.
It was simple to fix.

But my code was ripped out and the person I was trying to help refused
to accept further contributions from me. I was unhappy, and distressed
by his response.

It took me years to understand how much care even people like myself
put into good code, and how awful the experience was from the other
side of the fence.

Anyways... My takeaway from back then would be that new contributors
should avoid using what English grammar specialists call imperative
mood. (And, perhaps, when they get negative feedback, think through
the issues exposed by that feedback. This is neither trivial nor
easy.)
