thanks for the pointer, this lead me to the file 

/home/<username>/.config/user-dirs.dirs

When removed or emptied, pcmanfm-qt(1) got further.
( It contained just XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="/home/<username>/Downloads")

The next bump were the files
/usr/local/share/icons/Adwaita/scalable/mimetypes/x-office-spreadsheet.svg
and 
/usr/local/share/icons/Adwaita/scalable/devices/drive-harddisk.svg

which I had to remove to make pcmanfm-qt(1) start. 

But when I run the command
$ pkg_add -v -v -i -D installed -r adwaita-icon-theme
to restore the two deleted files, pcmanfm-qt(1) stops working, again.

Can anyone tell me what to do, apart from crippling adwaita-icon-theme?
What is going on here?

BTW, on my -current daily driver pcmanfm-qt(1) works fine, too.
