New port: net/monero
This from me is a criticism of the technology, not of the port maintainer. From my seat, present server software for crypto-currencies is both half baked and unsustainable. If you host one such server today, you are are truly hosting N servers, one for each currency, together with their respective huge databases, you also painted a target on your back for cyberattacks, and must sustain it all with dedicated server hardware and money to run it all. This is sustainable only if you are a bank. If one really wants to make a dent on the software side of cryptocurrencies, they must not ignore the end user and the opportunity for better design. One needs a single server software that speaks all currencies, with a small local database to serve the local wallets only. -------- Original Message -------- On Thursday, 12/18/25 at 08:39 Otto Cooper <otto.cooper@proton.me> wrote: There are underlying problems with all cryptocurrencies to date. If your wallets are secure, their content is not. They cost like gold, but they are not gold. If you host the software, you pay in kind to run a node that includes a huge database, and thus theves take an interest in you. Each currency uses their own software. You need a beafy dedicated server. You also pay trading fees. This is different from dns, for example, where the local server has a lean database, limited to your zones, and speaks a common language. Cryptocurrency is a half baked currency. -------- Original Message -------- On Saturday, 11/01/25 at 15:02 Andrew Kloet <andrew@kloet.net> wrote: Hi, I've never created a port before this but I believe I've created a proper port for monero (https://github.com/monero-project/monero/). I say believe because while it's working for me, I've not yet tested it on a completely fresh install of OpenBSD. Every OpenBSD computer I have has some software installed so it's possible I may have made some mistakes with omitting or including extraneous dependencies. Nonetheless it has worked to compile Monero. I will attach the port as it is so far for feedback. Also, I want to know what the standard is for creating service files. The Monero project themselves do not package for OpenBSD so they don't provide any rc script. In that case is it standard to omit providing one at all? Or should a default one be written?
