I used your suggestion.

Upstream uses letters (9d, 9e, 10, 10a) to append changes to the GNUstep
code only, and the numbers for changes affecting Mac.

Another idea i had was to drop the beta:

	pikopixel-1.0.10b

But that may break in a future version if upstream decides to drop beta
and use third level versioning like 1.0.2
