No idea wrt. replacing redshift, just testing this tarball:

For me under xfce4 without anything wayland related specifically installed
or configured by me, gammastep-indicator behaves the same as redshift-gtk
using the same config, i.e. clicking the indicator toggles it on/off,
right click shows menu with info, etc.

Spacing between makefile variables and = is inconsistent.
