moving foward also seems to work. 65 reps on test file without issue,
the most I had before was 20 or so.

the top few screens of https://github.com/haasn/libplacebo/commits/master/
have all sorts of fixes that look like they might involve memory
corruption, I didn't try to narrow it down further.
