I can reproduce the segfault, but it's difficult to figure out why it
segfaults with sdl12-compat.

sdl12-compat is used a lot less and it can be argued that software
should have adopted at least sdl2 by now. This makes it a better way to
gain experience. Once we sort this out, sdl2-compat will likely be
following...
