I initially thought I had fixed it because, at one point, running "make install" successfully installed the desktop environment binaries. However, when I moved the updated port to another machine for testing, the installation failed. It seems this port is broken, and if it cannot be fixed, I think the best course of action would be to remove it from the ports tree. I've considered what Theo Buehler said, and I think he is right, it doesn't make sense to invest time in updating this desktop environment, as it has been de facto abandoned by its mainstream developers.
