The packages you can download are just built from the ports tree,
there's no magic to it. If you get crashes from packages, there's a
very good chance that binaries from your own build will fail in the
same way.

For me, otter-browser from packages does run and open simple pages,
but fonts are a mess, and it segfaults when opening many pages.

otter-browser is still active upstream but they stopped making releases.

It may be worth trying to update the otter-browser port to use git head
and see how that goes. I didn't look closely but it seems to support
multiple backends (e.g. qtwebkit as well as qtwebengine).
