Another data point in here. I think it could be AMD and XFCE combination
which makes system sensitive to graphics problems.

I have similar setup. Integrated AMD, XFCE, no xorg.conf. HW is a first gen
T14s Thinkpad.

I have had stable firefox when I run the basic fvwm setup but under XFCE I
get firefox crashes and remote X programs ( through ssh -Y ) hang the
system to a point where giving power button shuts down after several hours.
So no remoting with XFCE.

Without the .xsession file, I get the default fvwm and I can work with
firefox and remote programs as much I want.
