I have now been running for two days with the XFCE's compositor turned off,
and using `picom` as an alternative compositor. Firefox has not crashed
once (instead of multiple times an hour). So that means the problem is not
due to "any compositor" but rather "xfwm4's compositior".

Although this means I have a decent workaround, I'm really not sure exactly
what is at fault here: it could be any of xfwm4's compositor, xenocara /
amdgpu, or Firefox. Or, maybe, they're all correct in isolation and there's
just some sort of unfortunate interaction when they're all used together.

Still, this might be useful for any other XFCE & Firefox users (and, based
on Hannu's experience, perhaps some non-Firefox XFCE users too?).
